100 players competed in the final round of the Louisiana Junior Golf Tour’s 8th Annual Sam Burns Junior Four-Ball Championship presented by LOTS powered by Legacy. Tee times began this morning at 8:00 AM off the 1st and 10th tee. The course played to a par 72 at 6,692 yards for the Overall Boys Division and approximately 5,594 yards for the Overall Girls and Boys 11-13 Division.

Choudrant, LA – It turned out to be quite a day of golf at Squire Creek with a three-team, four-hole playoff to crown the Overall Boys Division champions. Following an intense final round at Squire Creek Country Club, Reed Winkler of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Reid Habermehl of Tyler, Texas, claimed champion status at the 8th Annual Sam Burns Junior Four-Ball Championship, carding final scores of 67 and 65 for the tournament.
The top of the leaderboard kept shuffling around today with Parker Greene and Wayne Kabrich, both of Mandeville; Grey Ramsey of Choudrant and Mac Steltenpohl of Dothan, Alabama; and Reed Winkler of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Reid Habermehl all constantly changing who was in the lead throughout the round. Kabrich and Greene had an incredible round, especially with Kabrich's eagle on hole nine that allowed them to close the initial three-stroke deficit they started the day with. Ramsey and Steltenpohl were able to card six birdies in today’s round and limit themselves to one bogey, allowing them to stay aggressive and ultimately land themselves in the playoff. Winkler and Habermehl started the day two shots back but carded eight birdies and only one bogey to also send them into the playoff. All three teams finished with a gross score of 132, sending them into what ended up being a four-hole playoff.
The three teams first played the par-4 18th hole at Squire Creek. Parker Greene and Wayne Kabrich made bogey and were eliminated, while the other two teams made par. The remaining teams played 18 again. Ramsey had a birdie putt that came up just short, and Winkler made a testy par save of about five to six feet to extend the playoff. They then moved to hole 13. Steltenpohl hit it into the native area off the tee, hacked it out into the fairway, and got up and down from about 50 yards to save par for his team. Habermehl missed a birdie putt that would have won it by inches, leaving both teams making par and moving on to hole 14 for what would be the final playoff hole of the day.
On hole 14, the committee moved the teeing area to the back box, which changed the angle of the tee shot and made it about 50 yards longer, hoping to crown a champion. Even though the tee shot might have seemed intimidating, three of the four players found the fairway. The one player who didn’t, Reed Winkler, sailed it further right beyond the cart path into the rough but still had a wedge in hand. With all the pressure on him as the final player to hit his approach shot—and with the other three already on the green—he decided he had had enough of the playoff and stuck his shot to two and a half feet. He walked up and tapped in for birdie. Steltenpohl tried to extend the playoff but lipped out for birdie. Ramsey missed his putt, which concluded the playoff and made Winkler and Habermehl the 8th Annual Sam Burns Junior Four-Ball Championship champions, with Ramsey and Steltenpohl finishing as runner-up and Greene and Kabrich finishing third.
Reigning champions Evelynn Artieta of Denham Springs and Maci Williams of Brusly won this year’s championship wire-to-wire at 11-under par after carding a score of 71 today. Luckily for them, they had such a strong round yesterday that their 62 provided a good amount of cushion and allowed for a more relaxed final round, because Krysta Loftin of Pearland, Texas, and Makenzie Minshew of Spring, Texas, tried to give them a run for their money after going 7-under during today’s round, finishing just two shots back at 9-under par. Finishing in third were Rhyan Marcelissen of Broussard and Grace Goodwin of Bossier City at 5-under par.
Also with a wire-to-wire win, Landon Lotz of Slidell, LA, and Crew Galambos of Shreveport, LA, took home the trophies after finishing at 8-under par overall, carding a 67 during today’s final round. Finishing runner-up were Bowman Sandifer of Madison, MS, and Gunnar Ramey of Hattiesburg, MS, at 5-under par. There were two teams tied for third: Billy Buzzell of Baton Rouge and Wolf Anthony of Kenner, LA, and Samuel Perrodin of Ville Platte and Clark Irwin of Little Rock, Arkansas. A scorecard playoff determined third place. Buzzell and Anthony shot 2-under today, and Perrodin and Irwin shot 1-under, so Buzzell and Anthony earned third place.
Conditions were again perfect today in Choudrant, LA, with temperatures reaching around 80 degrees and skies filled with sunshine. A fun fact about the course is that the par-3 third hole was the hardest and most challenging hole this weekend, with a scoring average of 3.53. This is the 8th edition of this championship, and it wouldn’t be possible without the support of Sam Burns, who was out all weekend at the championship. It is truly a one-of-a-kind experience for the kids getting to meet and talk with him.
The Louisiana Junior Golf Tour again extends its appreciation to Squire Creek Country Club for opening its first-class facilities and to Sam Burns for his support in organizing this event. We would also like to thank our presenting sponsor, LOTS, for their support of this championship and their investment in junior golfers in Louisiana and surrounding regions.
